The worldwide sport landscape experienced such a pause in March 2020 as COVID-19 spread across the globe. This case study will review how crisis communication principles helped guide the decision to cancel the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament in Indianapolis during the COVID-19 pandemic the week of March 11-15, 2020. The annual event began first-round play on March 11, as normal. Within 24 harrowing hours, the tournament went from playing games with spectators, to playing games without fans, to finally canceling the event altogether. Utilizing a first-hand account of swift administrative action, Megan Barr (Volunteer Manager, Indiana Sports Corp) recounts how effective crisis communication was imperative for entities involved in hosting the tournament. The words and actions of decision makers reflect the first three of five stages of best-practice crisis communication--detection, prevention/preparation, and containment. Recovery, the fourth typical stage of a crisis, is happening now, while the fifth step, learning, continues as the pandemic unfolds. The actions of Big Ten Basketball Tournament organizers can act as a guide when--as history suggests is inevitable--subsequent events prompt sport interruptions.
