You are a health educator in a community health clinic serving children and families. She is 15 years old. She is rumored to be engaging in oral sex with multiple boys at school and is developing a negative reputation among her classmates. Her parents recently divorced. She is a smart student, but her academic performance has declined over the past year. She feels that she does not fit in with the other girls and her weight gain over the past year has affected her self-esteem. Her mother has brought her in to see you because she is very concerned. Sue denies she has a problem and thinks her mother is making a big deal out of nothing. Develop a six-week behavioral intervention plan to help Sue. Your plan should include the following:
1) How you will assess the problem/s.
a) Briefly identify behaviors that might compromise and promote Sue's health or safety.
b) Identify the key components of one behavior change model and explain how you will use this model to assess Sue's problem/s.
2) How you will motivate Sue to change her behavior/s.
a) Give an overview of "motivational interviewing" and describe how you will implement this counseling approach with Sue.
b) Describe how you will determine priorities, set goals, collect data, infer needs from data obtained, and measure behavior change.
c) Describe how you will assess the impact of your intervention on her behavior.
3) Describe counseling strategies that you will use to help her.
a) Briefly describe five counseling skills that you feel will be most useful in helping Sue develop insight into her problem/s.
4) Discuss how you will collaborate with other professionals to assist Sue.
