Assignment:

You will investigate intrapopulation variation using a population readily available in your local area. The idea is that the individuals within the population will vary in some measurable way (ex. weight, length, number of spots, etc.). Some ideas for population choices are:

1. Recommended: acorns located in a specific area (i.e. beneath a single tree)

Pinecones located in a specific area (i.e. beneath a single tree) are another option, though it may be difficult to obtain a large number of them if they are large pinecones.

2. If no suitable population can be identified, you may use black oil sunflower seeds, commonly sold as bird seed.

Identify the population that will be used for your study. Determine what characteristic is variable (i.e. is different among the selected individuals) and will be used for your measurements. Suggestions are length (measured with a ruler) or weight (measured on a digital kitchen scale).
