Assessment Task
Overview:
In our third module, we look at something surprising: it turns out that ordinary humans in our own society do not accept corporations in all parts of their lives. They are busy drawing boundaries that exclude the corporation from certain domains. Turns out there are limits to the human acceptance of the 'quasi-human body'!
In Week 11 we study one such example. Other examples of such border-making include:
Protection of sporting competitions from corporate dominance;
Academic and popular discourses and projects that seek to protect specific domains from corporate activity such as investment and ownership;
Religious programs that distance and critique aspects of the corporate world;
Community-based projects that seek to protect public and private space and infrastructure from the presence of corporations.
Supply and retail chains that provide alternatives to those offered by corporate providers.
Instructions:
Your group will make an oral presentation that incorporates visual materials (video or PowerPoint). The presentation will identify a project, action or advocacy intervention that seeks to limit the presence of the corporation in social, economic and political life.
Your presentation will do four things:
It will identify and describe the project/action or intervention of border-making that limits corporate action;
It will identify the interest or value that people are trying to protect by drawing these boundaries. What sorts of threats do they perceive in the corporation?
It will identify the nature or feature of the corporation that is problematised and critiqued by the project/action/intervention. In other words, what is it about the corporation that is beneath this border-making?
It will evaluate the action/project, using the ideas and concepts encountered previously in the course content.
To what extent does the presentation convincingly identify and describe a border-making project?
To what extent does the presentation identify the interest or value that people are trying to protect by drawing these boundaries?
To what extent does it identify the nature or feature of the corporation that is problematised and critiqued by the project/action/intervention. In other words, what is it about the corporation that is beneath this border-making?
To what extent does it evaluate the action/project, using the ideas and concepts encountered previously in the course content.
To what extent does the presentation display good grasp of the goals, conceptual content and terminology of ATS 2199?
Is the presentation delivered in an effective, clear, well-ordered and compelling style?
