Assignment: For this first assignment, you'll have the opportunity to draw from your personal experience and reflect on the key moments that you identify in your own development as a literate individual. We'll read from our chapter, and sections from a landmark scholarly essay by composition scholar Deborah Brandt on "sponsors of literacy" in which she reports on her study on the broader social and cultural contexts in which individuals develop (or experience barriers to) their literacy development. We'll also read sample professional literacy narratives, and some samples of student literacy narratives.
Questions: Your goal in a literacy narrative is as follows:
? Use self-assessment and reflection to identify the important experiences and influences of your own literacy development
? Use elements of narrative storytelling in your writing
? Both describe events, people, or experiences and reflect on or analyze the significance of those events, people, or experiences to your development as a writer, reader, and thinker
? Learn from and integrate new insights from the published literacy narratives about how language and literacy intersect with power, privilege, and language norms
