It is important to identify the hazards associated to a particular activity or event prior to it starting. This allows you to anticipate possible issues that may arise and gives to the opportunity to take preventative action and control the risks before they can have a chance to cause injury. Risk management is simply a structured and systematic approach to decision making for a range of issues including health and safety management. The risk assess ment process rates the level of risk (by severity and likelihood) and is used to create a plan on how the risk will be controlled. There are four stages of risk management which are set out in the legislation. They are: Identify hazards (a wet floor), Assess risks (may cause someone to slip or fall), Decide on controls (use 'wet floor' sign to warn people of the problem), Implement controls (place a 'wet floor' sign on the floor to control the potential for an accident), Monitor and review (This is where we check our plans and actions to ensure they achieved/ are achieving what they were supposed to).
