Developing and Writing Your Critical Literature Review

In this unit, you will formulate a research question and critically analyse relationships between research questions and methodologies. Additionally, you will complete your Critical Literature Review and begin considering what methodology would best suit your research question.

Think about the last time you had a goal of making a significant purchase. You might have had a broad general goal, such as, ‘I would like to purchase a home this year', which guided your further exploration of the topic. As you explored the topic, you most likely thought of specific questions, such as, ‘Do I have enough money to purchase this home?' or ‘What types of maintenance will this home require?' In this specific example, a general goal of wanting to buy a home led to more specific questions of cost and maintenance.

Similarly, when you choose a research goal or topic, you begin with a general interest that leads to more specific research questions. You have to refine what your interests are and what areas of exploration to include. For example, a broad research goal or topic, such as ‘improving professional development', would be too large a topic to address in one research proposal. This unit will guide you in refining your topic into a specific and manageable question to guide your Research Project Proposal. Once you have a research question, you can take the next important steps in the proposal writing process and chose what type of methodology would best align with your question.

Ethics Required Resources

In Unit 1, you were introduced to consider the ethical risks of research. Now that you have established your final research topic, you will need to start to consider the implications of your research design. Now, in Unit 3 you will need to specify these.

Demonstrate
The Unit 3 Project engages you in formulating research question(s), objectives, conducting a Critical Literature Review, identifying gap in literature and outlining study design/methodology.

Unit Project: Developing Your Critical Literature Review

This third unit offers one assessment - a ‘Project', which is to be submitted by the end of the unit. This is worth 30% of the overall module grade.

In this Project, you will write a coherent, critical review of the literature on your chosen topic, in which you will:

- Identify the gap that your research question intends to address.

- Outline your research question and objectives. Note: You will include an indication of the research questions and objectives that your research will address at the end of your literature review.

- Outline the study design and methods that are appropriate for addressing your identified objectives.

- Utilise feedback obtained, from colleagues and your Faculty Member, during the Unit 1 and Unit 2 Shared Activities.

To prepare for the Unit 3 Project:

- Read Unit 3 assigned readings, and review Unit 1 and 2 assigned readings.

- Identify and examine a number of literature review articles published in peer-reviewed management journals that are relevant to your chosen research topic, with particular attention to the articles structure, organisation and format.

- Review different study designs and methodological approaches to data collection, and consider the most appropriate study design and methodologies to answer your research question.

- Prepare the submission of your ethical form drafts on ethical considerations that impact your research, including ethical obligations to your participants, the organisation and/or setting where you will conduct your research, the management research community and the general public. Think about how you will address any potential ethical issues in your research and how this might impact your choice of research design and methods.

Project:

- Prepare a Critical Literature Review, identifying your research question, aims and objectives, and outline your proposed research design/methods, comprising of a total of 1500 words (which include Part 1 and Part 2).

Part 1: Critical Literature Review and Research Question(s), Aim(s) and Objective(s)

Remember that your literature review should provide a coherent, well-organised narrative. You should integrate as many of the research articles you found, as appropriate to support your arguments. Your literature review should address the following questions:

- What have researchers reported about your research topic? What types of studies have been done? What were the findings?

- What epistemological perspectives served as the foundation for these studies?

- What research approaches and methodologies were used, and why?

- How can the literature you reviewed inform the planning of your management research project?
At the end of your literature review, identify the gap in the literature. Then, state your research question (RQ), aim(s) and objectives. These should logically flow from your review of the literature on your chosen topic. You should outline the following:

- Clearly identify the gap in the literature that you identified, based on your literature review, that your research question intends to address (justify/provide a rationale for your choice of your research question and how your research question will allow you to address your research topic). Include your hypothesis/eses, if appropriate.

- Remember, you need to consider whether your research question is of sufficient scope to cover the topic.

- Demonstrate that your research question is actually researchable and sufficiently focused to guide a feasible research study.

Part 1 of this Project should be approximately 1,100 words in length.

Part 2: Outline of Research Design and Methods

- Provide a brief outline of your chosen research design/methodology and your rationale for selecting this particular methodology. Explain how it relates to your research question.

- Briefly describe the strengths and limitations, regarding chosen research design/methodology, and why other methodologies would not be as useful or appropriate.

- Outline your study setting and target population.

- Outline approach to sampling and how you will determine your sample size, if appropriate.

- Outline the data collection tools and techniques you will use as part of your chosen research methodology to address your research questions.

- Identify any ethical issues involved in data collection using your chosen methods, and discuss how you will address these issues.

Part 2 of this Project should be approximately 400 words in length.

Be sure to include references to all sources in Harvard Referencing Style.

Advice on word count: Submissions that range from 10% below to 10% above the recommended word count are acceptable.
