Assignment:

Select an example where fallacies are being used to sell you a product. These can be in any type of advertising- Internet ads, YouTube, TV commercials, print ads, and billboards to name a few. When you find the advertisement and have identified the specific fallacy in that advertisement answer the following in your discussion:

  • Identify the fallacy (or fallacies) in the advertisement. This should be the name of the fallacy, not a description of the flawed argument.
  • Next, apply the fallacy to the advertisement: how is the fallacy being used to persuade you to purchase a product or to think or act in a certain way- in other words, what is the persuasive message?
  • Identify the intended audience for each advertisement.

In your responses to classmates address the following:

  • Conclude if this ad is reflective of a stereotype. If so, explain how the audience is being stereotyped. What presuppositions or assumptions are being made?
  • Do you think the ad is successful? Explain why or why not.
  • Using your classmates' advertisements as an example, explain how critical thinking can make us better consumers.
