Assignment:
The NASW Code of Ethics provides social workers with standards that guide professional conduct. These standards include how to engage with clients, professional behaviors in the workplace and with colleagues, and professional behavior in the practice setting.
In the Learning Competencies and Social Work Standards section of the course, there is an infographic on professional social work standards that include but are not limited to how to initiate communication, being punctual, being self-aware, and appropriately expressing oneself verbally and in writing.
Steps
Using the NASW Code of Ethics and professional social work standards infographic as a source
Identify the ethical standards from the Code of Ethics and Professional Standards (behaviors) you would use at the agency where you are employed as a social worker to engage George and his family from the Case Study: George and his Family. Include two to three exmaples of what you, in the role of a social worker, would say to George or his parents.
Include a discussion of how you would use those standards.
George and his Family Case Study:
George is a 13-year old who identifies as male. George lives with his father (40), Sam and mother (37), Paige and siblings, Rob (10), and Symone (7). George frequently lashes out at his siblings in anger, which impacts his being able to develop a strong bond with them. He and his parents have been at odds lately due to George performing poorly academically and being found using marijuana. George also struggles with making friends and has poor interpersonal skills.
Maternal Family History
There is a family history on the maternal side of the family with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.
George's mother suffers from depression, currently takes medication, and has had a suicide attempt where George found her unconscious.
The family has experienced loss with the death of the maternal grandfather and the maternal grandmother, Rosa coming to live with them and George's mother taking on the caregiver role.
Financial and community resources
George's parents earn a minimal annual salary of $50,000 for a family of five. This often leaves the family without enough money for regular doctor visits for preventive care or meeting basic needs for shelter, utilities, food, medical care, transportation, etc.
The family has some support from the local church and the children's school.
Difficulties at School
George is experiencing some difficulties with school. He has been performing below grade level in all core academic courses and is in jeopardy of failing 8th grade. Recently, he was involved in a fight with another student resulting in his being suspended from school for five days.
The school counselor has been attempting to meet with George, but he has been non-responsive to her and refusing to answer any of her questions in their meeting. She is considering referring George to a mental health professional (social worker) outside of school where he can receive more intensive clinical services.
