Assignment:
This is connected to the issues single parents face and, as you know after reading all these chapters, single parents often face many challenges both financially and emotionally. Single parents might need help watching children while they work, or need money to buy food or gas. For this activity, use a sociological lens to examine the reasons a social safety net (public assistance/welfare programs like TANF, Medicaid, Food Stamps, etc.) is needed in U.S. society.
Present a case study of a single parent you interview or research. Consider depictions of single parents you may have seen in the news. Identify the components of the parent's private safety net (i.e. support from family, fictive kin, friends), or determine the reasons there is no private safety net in place for this individual.
In the later case, they may use social/public safety net to support the family. Discuss both types of safety nets that families use. Use one to two major concepts and theories or appropriate terminology from the text to examine the factors that might increase or decrease the likelihood of a useful private safety net in your example. Be sure to (1) explain each concept, theory, and term applied, (2) explain how each concept and theory applies to the formation of private safety nets, and (3) evaluate the social value and stigma of the need for safety nets.
