Question: This essay is going to explore the usefulness of ethnography when researching children and young people's friendship, Ethnography is a qualitative method of research whereby the researcher carries out extensive observations of children and young people. This is achieved by becoming involved in their day-to-day activities over a period of time by joining in the activities of the group, therefore, giving the researcher first-hand experience of what happens within the group. Research can take place over months or sometimes years. This type of research can allow the researcher to become familiar with any cultural influences that are commonplace within the group and identify the complexities that occur. The purpose of this essay is to examine the advantages and disadvantages of using such research methods.
