Assignment:
The author states "I know one outstanding corporate director who twice orchestrated the dismissal of fully competent C-suite executives because they didn't have enough potential and she wanted to make their roles - key development opportunities - available to people who did."
Discuss:
- your personal reaction to this action by the corporate director
- if the culture of your own organization would support an action like this, and
- what additional issues would need to be considered, prior to these C-suite executives being dismissed?
The authors make a pretty compelling case for assessing candidates for employment on potential. He states "the question is not whether your company's employees and leaders have the right skills; it's whether they have the potential to learn new ones." The author goes on to say that "in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment (VUCA), competency-based appraisals and appointments are increasingly insufficient." He goes on to talk about the 5 indicators of potential, (the right motivation, curiosity, insight, engagement, and determination).
1. Review each one of those 5 indicators of potential and be prepared to share your own and develop group consensus on 1 interview question for each, that you could ask either the candidate for employment or one of his/her reference checks, to really dig in and identify the candidate's attainment of each of those qualities.
2. Prepare 5 questions, one for each of the 5 indicators (Hint: Behavioral interviewing, or interviewing using STAR (Situation-Task-Action-Result) or SAR (Situation-Action-Result) questions can be very helpful).
- Here is an example: Working collaboratively with all kinds of individuals, both inside and outside this organization, is a key skill for success in this role. Please provide a specific example of when you worked collaboratively with others. Please do not speak only in generalities, but provide specifics; state what the situation was, what actions you personally took, and the result of your actions.
