Assignments: Journals/Short Papers: Short Papers are worth 25 points each and you must turn in four papers. Each paper should reflect on the site visits or on your own research and make reasonable connections to the readings. ALL PAPERS must incorporate the readings -and by readings. this means multiple readings into your observations. Each paper should be between 2-4 pages double spaced. Journals/short papers are a chance to provide a rough draft of your final paper and presentation taking down informal notes and observations that will become part of your final paper and presentation. These papers will be evaluated based on (4) criteria: 1] You must incorporate some field observations from our field trips to the sites 2] Identify the Burnham or Sullivan-inspired elements of what you are writing about. 3] Critical analysis of the place or building using the readings. You must incorporate multiple readings into your papers. Use the readings to support your assertions. 4] Writing style, spelling, organization, grammar. Logic of organization and readability, and use of the 3 R's Recording, Reflecting and Revising. You do not need to include a formal reference list, but you must refer to the readings and show me that you understand the readings.

Your short papers should be 2-4 pages double spaced, typed 1" margins Times New Roman 11 pt. font. Name and Date should be at the top. Your papers should incorporate the 3 R's:

Recording: This is where you simply record what you are seeing, observing. I will be grading your observational skills in this section

Reflecting: This is where you go back over your observations and critically write about them. I am looking for evidence that you have done the reading here.

Revising: You should read over your short papers at least once before turning them in. I expect to read writing that is grammatically correct with no spelling mistakes.

This work extends into your your midterm and final paper. Revising demonstrates that you understand and have evaluated your original writing, have incorporated other sources such as your readings and have edited your work.

You should have at least (4) short papers that incorporate the readings into your observations.

Journals/Short Papers will be evaluated based on (4) criteria:

1] You must incorporate field observations from our walking tours or from your own observations about Chicago.

2] Identify the Burnham or Sullivan inspired elements of what you are writing about. What are some of the details that we've talked about in class that you see while we are out in the field?

3] Critical analysis of the place or building using the readings. You must incorporate the readings into your journals. Use the readings to support your assertions.
