Substance use is a global epidemic by both men and women. There are twice as many men than women who are opioid users, however, once women become a user they rapidly increase their rate of drug consumption. The research on opioid use in women is not prominent and has an effect on whether women should be punished or treated. The negative health and social consequences affect women more than they do men. "One in three people who have substance use disorder is a woman, with only one in five people who are in treatment is a woman" (Meyer, Isaacs, El-Shahawy, Burlew, Wechsberg 2018). Studies have shown that most existing addiction research is male-oriented. Which is to believe why women are not in treatment like men are and why they suffer more negative consequences. In 2015, the National Institutes of Health required all funded research to account for sexual orientation as a variable, and in July 2016 President Obama signed the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act which is to expand access to critical treatment plans and overdose Prevention services (Meyer, et. al 2018). In the women-specific services, there are limited happenings for pregnant and postpartum women; there has been an official acknowledgment that opioid abuse represents a public health emergency, it is now being accompanied by dedicated funding. Unfortunately, it is mostly being funneled to law enforcement and toward the development of non-opioid treatments for pain.
