CASE STUDY:
Chris is an Operation Engineer working with an Inspection and Testing Company based in Abu Dhabi. One of his company's major customers is a reputable oil & gas company in UAE.
During a scheduled plant shutdown by the customer in Abu Dhabi, Chris's company was awarded the job to perform Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) at all pipelines in the plant. In order to secure the job with this major customer, the owner of Chris's company had underquoted their price to the customer although knowing the high specification already set by the customer during the bidding stage.
When performing the NDT operation, Chris was instructed by his company's management to bring two sets of equipment; first, that meets the customer requirement and second, that is cheaper and not meeting the customer requirement. Chris was instructed by his management to use the cheaper equipment when the customer representative is not around to monitor the operation in order to lower down the operational cost.
Chris is currently in a dilemma where although he is obliged to adhere to his company's instruction, but by using a cheaper equipment, it may jeopardize the integrity of the pipeline that may result in damage of property and worst case, fatality.
i) Identify the alternatives that Chris can do in this situation
ii) Evaluate the alternatives.
iii) Justify the selected alternative based on code of ethics of different Engineering society and boards.
