Reference no: EM132424123

The purpose of this assignment is to examine the size and scope of the sports business industry, and to identify possible sports business career opportunities and trends.

  • Within the business-to-business global sport ecosystem, sports management jobs can vary from direct interaction with professional athletes to media promotion, retail, and a host of other diverse opportunities. As a sports business major, learning about a variety of jobs is essential as you begin identifying your skillsets and narrowing your focus to determine what type of position you hope to gain upon graduating. When considering sports business careers, keep in mind that being a professional athlete or coach is a reality for a very small percentage of people. Most individuals in the sports business industry work in a range of other capacities.

Consider the following job opportunities within the different sectors of the global sport ecosystem:

  • Content providers: Leagues, teams, associations, and federations.
  • Distribution channels: Television, satellite, cable, radio, Internet, social media, print, arenas, stadiums, facilities.
  • Goods and service providers: Retail, sporting goods manufacturing, food and beverage, health care, ticketing, construction and architecture, professional services, sports agencies, marketing and branding, technology solutions, consulting, security, telecom, video gaming, corporate sponsorships, public relations, and financial services.

Consult WorkInSports, the Sports Business Journal Career Link page, LinkedIn, the "Sports Business Career Resources" document, and your other study materials to help you research potential careers and identify a position in each sector of the global sport ecosystem that interests you.

Research job postings for the positions you have identified to see what qualifications and experience organizations expect from applicants, in addition to the responsibilities of the position. Using LinkedIn or another professional networking site, look up individuals who work in the positions you have identified and note their training, education, and prior work experience.

Search for each of the three positions in the "Occupational Outlook Handbook" on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website to identify that job's availability in both your state and the country, as well as the projected job outlook.

Record your research findings in the "Sports Business Landscape Graphic Organizer."

Based on your research and what you have learned about each career, pick one career and write a 750-1,000-word essay that answers the following questions:

  1. Out of the three careers you researched, why are you most interested in this one? What skills do you have that will equip you to be successful in this role? What skills would you need to gain or improve to be an optimal candidate for this position?
  2. Based on your research of the career paths of individuals who work this position, what are some jobs and career advancement opportunities they held early in their careers that led them to the position you have selected here? According to the job descriptions you have seen, what kind of work experience do these positions require? What internships or entry-level positions might you look for in order to achieve this type of sports business career?
  3. How and where does this career fit into the size and scope of the global sport ecosystem? What does your research tell you about career trends within the sector that contains the position in which you are interested?

Submit your essay in the same document as your graphic organizer.
