In week 1, we identified some challengers for IS managers today. Identify the 2 most significant challenges you would see as being important to IS managers in the current environment (you can talk about this from any experience you may have had with organisations). Explain why you see these as being important challenges.

Question 2

Case study - Government IT Failures

A recent report in Computerworld (referencing the Senate's Finance and Public Administration References Committee) highlighted a series of failures over the previous 5 or so years since the current government has been in power with links to other material that details some of the problems.

While there could be some debate as to whether some of these incidents might be characterised as a failure, it can provide some useful material for our discussion. Real life case studies have many dimensions, including management issues, technical issues, communications issues, public (user) confidence in the system amongst others. Many major system failures can be quite complex and have many different dimensions to them, that all might contribute to the outcome.

Question 3

Use this report to identify some themes that may emerge around IT failures. It is important that you focus on both 'business' and 'technical' issues with the themes.

Do you think there might be a role for a whole of government IT coordination agency (which the DTA is meant to be) to help avoid problems like this in the future? Explain the nature of activities that this agency may do to help with these issues.
