Problem: Autism Spectrum Disorder

• Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is very prominent in the news and media today due to the steady rise of incidence rates in our population. What information from the news and media have you gathered about autism? Do you have any direct or indirect experience with a person who has autism? In this video, you will meet Gavin. He is a three-year-old boy who excels in many areas, yet also has many challenges. He has autism. Watch how his preschool teacher, Rachel Oliver, discusses Gavin's strengths, challenges, and needed supports as she walks you through his day in her inclusive classroom.

• Identify some of Gavin's strengths and challenges. What does he do well in the classroom and with which activities or skills does he have difficulties?

• Occasionally, a child without a disability will need individualized support within the preschool classroom. The support could be as simple as giving the child more attention as he gets used to coming to preschool for the first time. Gavin, on the other hand, needs daily and very specific individualized support due to having autism. Describe some of the individualized support and teaching strategies that you see the teachers use to help Gavin participate in activities with his peers.
