Homework: Rhetorical Analysis of Leader Language
Rhetoric Leadership Sinek TED Talk Rhetorical Analysis
Purpose: This homework is designed to help you identify and evaluate the use of various rhetorical devices that are linked to Inspirational Motivation and Idealized Influence among transformational leaders.
Procedures: Go to Ted Talks and select a presentation that appears interesting to you for its topic, the speaker, or both. Plan to view the presentation several times and be ready to include quotations (examples) from the presentation to support your arguments.
Apply the concepts from the handout Rhetorical Devices Linked to Inspirational Motivation and Idealized Influence to analyze the presentation.
Product: Your paper will be 7 to 9 double spaced pages.
A. The opening paragraph should state the name of the speaker and presentation, and a single sentence summary of the thesis the TED speaker is presenting. The opening paragraph should also include your overall assessment of the speaker's transformational rhetoric. Does this presentation represent strong, middling, or weak use of the rhetorical devices of Inspirational Motivation and Idealized Influence? Finally, you should include a preview that highlights the 2-4 rhetorical devices you will focus on in your analysis.
B. The body of the paper should be broken down into 2-4 main ideas, each representing the application of a single rhetorical device to the TED presentation you selected. Each main point should include quotations and paraphrases from the presentation to illustrate the point you are making. Make sure to explain what each quotation illustrates for the reader.
C. The conclusion of the paper should restate your main ideas and summarize your overall evaluation of the presentation.
Learning Competencies
A. Structure: Students will develop a paper with a clear structure; with an introduction, including specific purpose statement and preview of main ideas; body, and conclusion. There will be transitions between main ideas in the body of the paper.
B. Identification: Students will be able to listen to leader language and identify various rhetorical devices used to enhance Inspirational Motivation and Idealized Influence.
C. Evaluation: Students will be able to critique a leader's Inspirational and Idealized Influence rhetoric for its relative effectiveness.
D. Synthesis: Students will be able to synthesize their critique into a coherent argument about the leader's rhetoric.
