Question: Course Learning Objective One - Identify the purposes of American criminal law and punishment List the six purposes of criminal law and punishment, as they were presented in this course. For each purpose, provide an example of a factual situation where a certain disposition (probation, prison, rehab, etc. ) would further that particular purpose. Your factual situations can be based on prior criminal law cases, on cases in the current news, or on scenarios you make up. Example: One of the five purposes of criminal law is incapacitation: making sure that a dangerous person does not continue to prey on members of the public. The desire to incapacitate is one justification for the life sentence given to Lee Malvo, who, although he was only 17 years old at the time, was found guilty of deliberately shooting multiple people who were strangers to him. There was an overwhelming need to stop him from continuing that behavior! His life sentence was compatible with the need to incapacitate him.
