Question: Brand Matters! is a successful medium-sized boutique marketing firm. Their senior manager, Gabriella, just landed a significant contract, naming Brand Matters! the social media strategist for a large retail client Red & White House (RWH).
RWH leadership has high standards who care deeply about their brand. The RWH leadership team has a reputation of being a challenge to please, as they demand excellence. The Brand Matters! current workforce does not have the capacity to handle the new contract and added workload for the RWH contract. Brand Matters! will need to hire three social media specialists, who will work as a team to support a highly lucrative RWH client. The three new employees will work on Gabriella's team; they must be creative, work well together, and effectively meet RWH social media strategy and implementation demands.
Gabriella recently heard that this newly-formed team would work virtually. Gabriella is confident that her applicant pool will be filled with business school marketing graduates from the past few years who have the necessary technical skills. However, she has never managed virtual collaboration. Gabriella asks you to:
(1) identify potential benefits of using virtual teams (pros)
(2) articulate why virtual teams may present special managerial challenges (cons)
(3) suggest at least 3 ways to manage virtual teams effectively
