Daniel Goleman describes emotional intelligences as a "key set of...characteristics", which include
- Abilities such as being able to motivate oneself and persist in the face of frustration
- abilities to control impulse and delay gratification
- [ability] to regulate one's moods and keep distress from swamping the ability to think
- [ability] to empathise and hope (Goleman, 1996. p 34)
Essentially, Goleman says that whilst technical skills and thinking (cognitive) abilities rely on traditional intelligence, there is a whole range of 'emotional competencies' linked to emotional intelligences such as being self-aware and being able to empathise with others.
