Assignment:

A) Identify one provision of the original Constitution (not including the Bill of Rights) that you think reflects careful thought about how to improve government. Explain what it was meant to accomplish and how. Then identify one other provision of the Constitution that you think reflects self-interest or prejudice on the Framers' part, explaining your choice.

B) How has the relative power and importance of the national and state governments in the U.S. changed since the founding (and especially in the last 100 years or so). Include discussion of how and why changes in the scope of power exercised at one level have affected the scope of power exercised at the other.

C) What is one way in which a large country can benefit from allowing state (and local) governments lots of room to make their own policies? What is one reason it might benefit from policy making that's centralized in the national government?

D) Why is it so difficult for the president or members of Congress to consistently support measures that would reduce the federal debt? What is one important reason why we would be better off with a smaller debt. Also one reason why it can sometimes be best to go further into debt?

E) Consider this claim: "Partisan gerrymandering is undemocratic." Do you lean toward agreeing or disagreeing with that claim? Why? Your answer should demonstrate a clear understanding of how partisan gerrymandering operates.
