1. Ch. of Industrial and Organizational Psychology introduces the topic of motivation at work. In this regard, all theories explored reside within one of three camps. These include needs theories (e.g., the WHY of motivation), process theories (e.g., the HOW of motivation), and also application-based theories (those that are inherently pragmatic in their orientation). More narrowly, the former suite of theories broadly suggests that we, as human beings, are motivated to meet an unmet need...and that is what drives them to act in specific ways (e.g., they are seeking to meet currently unfulfilled needs).
The process theories reflect HOW you get people to do things/act in specific ways. While rooted in theory, the third suite is deliberately applied in nature and is inherently pragmatic (once more).
Which of the needs theories is most meaningful/relevant to you, and why? In thus describing it, identify what you like about it, how it might be used within organizational settings, and any gaps/shortcomings in the theory.
2. Identify one process theory (e.g., equity theory, organizational justice theory, or expectancy theory) AND one application-based theory (e.g., Goal Setting Theory, Job Characteristics Theory, Reinforcement and Incentives, Reinforcement Theory, Compensation) of motivation that speaks to you personally (e.g., as being most interesting, relevant, engaging, etc.). In each case, please identify what you like about it, how it might be used within organizational settings, and what your example(s) teach us about how these theories might be utilized/applied effectively.
