One of the most important functions of a facilitator is to make a setting in which, as much as possible, all members have an opportunity to be heard and valued. This is complicated by the fact that, in the group context, each member is different and unique. Helping group members to express their experiences, and to also validate others' experiences is an essential part of the group process.

Due to their own lived history of being involved with structures that have caused oppression and marginalization, some group members may bring these experiences into the group process. The value of working in group settings is that each of these members is able to share and recognize support. However, it can also bring about challenges for the facilitator as they assist to promote equity in the group context.

1. Identify one example of a historically oppressed people group to which a group member may belong. Share how that might impact the group process.

2. Understanding that these experiences may cause equity gaps among group members, give a specific example of how a group facilitator could assist those specific individuals in the group context . Explain how a specific intervention or technique could influence the group member to feel involved and less marginalized.

3. How might you involve other group members in this discussion? What specifically can you do to facilitate group cohesion?
