Assignment:
1. Explain a patient scenario in which the patient presents with an acute problem-injury, disease, or illness.
2. Report, with some medical literature reference, the typical treatment plan for that acute problem (e.g. drug regimen)
3. Identify one chronic condition-disease or illness-that is a condition that would require reporting consistent with the coding conventions wherein:
• you code for chronic diseases as many times as the patient receives treatment for the diseases, or
• you code for the chronic disease because it influences the treatment of the presenting problem, or
• you code for all documented co-morbidities or co-existing conditions at the time of the encounter to the extent, they are relevant.
4. Beyond identifying the chronic condition, using the medical and coding literature, detail potential circumstances that would suggest the condition would be reportable under the conventions above. Provide some medical literature reference.
5. Finally, code out the conditions, both the acute problem and the chronic problem, diagnosis codes, ICD-10-CM codes, only.
