Analysis of one group mate's WLE:
In this aspect of the assessment you are required to provide a 1 page (maximum) summary of your analysis of one group mate's worst leadership experience.
In this analysis,
1- Identify the person on which you are basing the analysis upon.
2- Based on your discussions, summarise your understanding of the target individual's leadership experience. In essence summarise the Exploration and Integration
3- Based on your observations of your group mates throughout the course, apply course concepts to determine the extent to which the target individual contributed to the experience by acts of commission or omission. Your task is to identify non-productive patterns of behaviour in the capabilities of the Distributed Leadership Management (DLM) practiced by the individual or the organisation that led to the behaviour leading to the worst leadership experience. In particular elicit the governing variables that existed at the time of the decision.
4- Advocate your position logically and clearly.
The purpose of this assignment is to provide an alternative lens, if it is available, through which you can view the event. This is not a therapy session: Do not relate any private life experiences (e.g. childhood experiences, relationship to parent and siblings etc). You are expected to point out cues that contributed to the leadership failure, such as faulty sensemaking, single loop learning, treating an adaptive situation as a technical challenge, making inferences, being a lightning rod, not getting on the balcony. What may also happen is that the lens you provide may reveal that the failure may not have been a failure. The lens that you offer must be logically developed, grounded in theory and open to testing, and is based on the leadership capabilities of the Distributed Leadership Management (DLM) as a diagnostic tool. Your task is to identify non-productive patterns of behaviour in the capabilities of the DLM practiced by the individual or the organisation that led to the behaviour leading to the worst leadership experience. Read the papers on DLM before applying the theory!!
