Problem
The site that I have chosen to review and discuss is PubMed with the U.S National Library of Medicine. The contents of the site are vast. It essentially is a database of studies, articles, journals and book citations that revolve around all things biomedical (PubMed, n.d.). The site functions as a search wheras the user can input their interest or topic and will then receive credible resources to review (PubMed, n.d.). Due to the functionality of the site there is no precise publication date, however each resource will note the publishing date as well as all other pertinent information required for citation purposes (PubMed, n.d.).
In selection this site as a credible health information site for nursing professionals there were a few things that I recognize as marking it credible. Firstly, the domain is a .gov citation. This is important because it tells the reader that the information published is highly scrutinized and deemed credible. This is important because there are other sites on the web where lay people can publish anything they like freely, unchecked for accuracy. The second characteristic that I was able to ascertain quickly regarding PubMed is that the resources provided are current. While the site functions as a search database, the resources presented are current and easily checked (PubMed, n.d.). It is important depending on your purpose to check each resource independently for publication date to remain as current as possible. The last and most important characteristic that qualifies PubMed as a credible resource is its accuracy. The resources presented are scholarly articles that have usually gone through peer review processing and have multiple contributors (PubMed, n.d.). This signifies that the information being provided is well reviewed and deemed accurate by multiple entities prior to publishing (PubMed, n.d.).
1. State one characteristic about the site identified by your peer that you found helpful/not so helpful as a health care professional and nursing student. Cite the classmate's site as an in-text citation and matching reference.
2. Explain why you agree/ disagree that the site is credible for health care professionals (or not).
3. Identify how you might use the site in the future either in practice or in this nursing program.
