• PLANNING: defining goals, establishing strategy and developing plans to coordinate activities
• ORGANISING: determining what tasks are to be done, who is to do them, how tasks are to be grouped, who reports to whom
• LEADING: motivating employees, directing the activities of others, communication channels, resolving conflict
• CONTROLLING: the process of monitoring performance, comparing it with goals and correcting any deviations, to ensure that they are achieved according to the plan
INSTRUCTIONS:
You are to research this topic and prepare a report. Using any of the popular periodicals such as Management Today, BRW, Australian Financial Review, or from any of the management textbooks, find examples (case studies) of managers doing each of the four management functions. Write up a description and explain how these are examples of that function.
Areas of discussion in your report should focus on the following:
• PLANNING: Identify how the manager is utilising the planning process - this could be at functional levels of the organisation
• ORGANISING: Determine how the planning is used to organise the activities required to carry out the plan
• LEADING: Outline how the functional manager leads his/her team to achieve the plan
• CONTROLLING: Describe the control measure the functional manager has put in place in order to monitor and review the plan.
