Question: Applying a ‘Whole systems approach to obesity' to a factor contributing to obesity within an English local authority

A. Introduction, background and selection of factor (~750 words)

Provide an outline of the problem of obesity at a national and global scale and provide critical detail on one particular health consequence that might be associated with this.

Select one factor contributing to obesity (you can use the Foresight report to initially guide your choice). This can be applicable for an adult population or a child population or both (be specific). Justify with evidence from the wider literature why you have selected this particular factor.

B. Select one local authority (LA) in England

Follow the six-step process of the Whole systems approach to obesity for your particular factor and this particular LA as further outlined below. Additional resources have been provided on Moodle. At each stage ensure that your statements are supported by statistics and/or evidence from the wider literature, which you need to evaluate critically throughout. Consider throughout how the wider evidence might apply to your particular example. (~1750 words)

Please see further details on the six-step process here

1. Identify high-level stakeholders that you would you involve and explain why you would involve them

2. Map the local area by showing its characteristics in terms of obesity prevalence and looking at current assets and or provisions that (might) already contribute to addressing your chosen factor

3. Identify additional stakeholders from the community that you would involve and explain why you would involve them

4. Identify specific actions that can be taken and how stakeholders can be involved in these. Set targets for specific actions that are SMART

5. Explain how you would keep track of the progress of the actions. How would you know whether the specific targets were met?

6. Explain how you would monitor and evaluate the processes

C. Provide a conclusion summarising your main points and provide an outlook of which other factors of obesity might also be addressed with your plan (unintended consequences) (~500 words)

Please ensure that you are using the APA referencing system and that you meet the standards of working at L7, which include high-quality academic writing, evidence of wider reading of high-quality sources and critical analysis and evaluation. Please note that you will need to use third person throughout your writing as this is not a reflective piece of work.

Where appropriate you can use tables and figures in your work but remember that you should also provide a brief summary of the table and figure content in your main text.

All tables and figures need to be titled and labelled according to APA referencing standards. Further information can be found in the APA referencing guidelines
