Case Study: Tom recently completed training and started working in an aged care facility in the dementia care wing. He was looking after Mrs Green she is 90 years. She is a usually a sweet lady, but she sometimes gets very agitated and restless. She spits on him when he is helping her put on her shoes and lashes out. Whilst Tom is attending to a wound dressing on her arm, she grabbed his shirt collar, causing him to choke. Eventually, he was able to release Mrs Green grip from his shirt collar after he reassures and calms her. He leaves the room feeling very shaken and unsettled. His has a sore neck and some bruising from the incident. Tom did not report this incident as he was afraid of losing his new job and so remained quiet about the incident.
Tom began to dislike his work and dreaded going in for shifts. He was sleeping poorly and started skipping meals. Each time he had to go to work he had a headache and was finding it difficult to concentrate and manage his workload. Tom's family have observed recent changes in his behaviour, and they are worried about him. He tells his family to give him some space.
