Structural Family Therapy and Family Sculpting

Just as there are many theoretical orientations to individual psychotherapy, there are many models for family therapy, including psychodynamic, transgenerational, experiential, structural, strategic, systemic, cognitive-behavioral, DBT, social construction, and psychoeducational models. An integrated approach may involve theory and methods from multiple schools of family therapy. For example, Family Sculpting is a method that is associated with structural family therapy; however, the exercise can be used in therapy that is based on other family therapy theories.

Family Sculpting is an exercise in which the identified client positions family members to represent a perspective on the present family situation visually. Members may be positioned close or far, above or below, facing toward or away from each other. The positions may indicate power, alliance, conflict, alienation, and other family dynamics. The method can illustrate concepts that are associated with transgenerational and systemic theories. It can also reveal concepts associated with psychodynamic theory, in a phenomenological way that is associated with experiential therapy. Learning about various theories and methods is essential to developing family therapy skills.

Family Sculpting

A technique in family therapy in which the therapist asks one or more members of the family to arrange the other members (and lastly themselves) in relation to one another in terms of posture, space, and attitude so as to portray the arranger's perception of the family, either in general or with regard to a particular situation or conflict. This technique often reveals family dynamics visually in a way that may not be adequately captured in verbal descriptions by family members.

A. Gather family and friends, and have one person position at least five other people to represent a specific family. Use your own family or friends for this homework. If you do not have family or friends available, use your genogram. Identify why sculpting may be important and how it may help the client and yourself as the counselor. Describe how you can use this information in a counseling session.

B. Take a picture of the Family Sculpture. Either the family you used or a picture of the family being sculpted on a piece of paper. Post this picture with your paper in Homework Five.

C. Interview the sculptor, and each member in the sculpture, or if you used your family write up what you think each family member would say based on the sculpture you created on paper.

D. Write a one to two-page paper in APA format. Identify the family. Identify/interpret emotional/ relational themes depicted in the sculpture. Include responses from those in the sculpture. Attach the picture for number 2 in this homework.
