Aim
1. To identify need of gate driving circuits, study different types of gate driver circuits for power semiconductor devices and recommend gate drivers for different converter circuits.
2. To design at least two gate driver circuits, simulate them using suitable software tool and fabricate the same using bread board/printed circuit boards.
Learning Outcomes
1. Describe and analyze AC/DC, DC/DC, AC/AC and DC/AC static power conversion schemes. (LO-3)
2. Work in a project team to solve a power electronic application problem. (LO-6)
Task-1
Semiconductor devices are used as switching devices in Power Electronic applications. For switching the power semiconductor devices from their OFF state to ON state and vice versa faithfully, we need gate driver circuits.
-Outline the exact need of gate driver circuits for switching power semiconductor devices.
There are various types of gate driver circuits such as discrete gate drivers, gate drivers employing integrated circuits, non-isolated gate drivers, isolated gate drivers etc.
Identify at least three different gate driver circuits for their detailed study that includes the following.
-Circuit configuration
-Detailed operation of the circuit
-Design of component ratings
-Simulation of circuits using any suitable software tool such as PSIM, Multisim, Orcad etc
-Comparison of the three different gate driver circuits
-Recommendation of the studied gate driver circuits for different converter configurations
Task-2
Design, fabricate and test at least two different gate driver circuits, out of which one must be an isolated gate driver.
