Assignment:
An HIM director for a large healthcare network is seeking to increase the HIM budget and add departmental line items for two areas: the employees' annual HIM membership cost and professional development training. The healthcare network is comprised of 3 acute-care hospitals, 30 physician office practices, and 2 rehabilitation centers. There are HIM employees at each hospital and rehab center, and there is a centralized HIM office for the physician practices. In total, there are 50 HIM employees, all with various levels of certification from CCA to RHIA.
Currently, the healthcare network does not pay for the annual AHIMA membership cost. Nor does the network provide in-house professional development opportunities for HIM employees. However, the network will only hire HIM staff with credentials and requires that the employees maintain AHIMA's continuing education unit (CEU) requirements. The director has researched information on the cost, the various credentials within the HIM departments for the network, and the needs in terms of professional development for the next fiscal year. The HIM employee composition is the following:
- 50 HIM employees
- 3 with CHDA credential
- 2 with CDIP credential
- 15 with CCS credential
- 20 with RHIT credential
- 10 with RHIA credential
- 30 with more than one credential
