Part 1:

Question 1. Identify three criticisms you are likely to encounter (hear those directed at you) from others in your day-to-day communication (If you have trouble thinking of criticisms, invite one or more people who know you well to supply some ideas).

Question 2. For each criticism, write one or more non-defensive responses using the alternatives (in Interplay, 2018, pgs. 372-377).

Question 3. Be sure to label/identify the type of your non-defensive responses (for example: agreeing with the perception, agreeing with the critic, seeking more information).

Question 4. Be sure your responses are sincere and that you can offer them without counterattacking your critic.

Part 2:

1. Write down FIVE "I can't" statement - focused on a relationship where you have a hard time communicating. Include your feelings as you read your statement (self-pity, regret, concern, frustration, and so on.)

2. Re-write your FIVE statement, except this time change each "can't" to "won't." Then reflect on whatever thoughts you have about what this change.

3. For each of your FIVE statements, decide whether "can't" or "won't" is more appropriate and explain why.

4. Are there any instances when your decision that you "can't" do something was the only force keeping you from doing it? (In order to use invitational communication, empowering can words help you identify your freedom to make choices (inviting yourself to take charge and make decision!)
