Use this literature review to explore a gender issue, concept, or theory you're interested.
Question 1. Find 3 gender & communication academic peer-reviewed articles (Note: the articles must be grounded in gender studies and address a communication topic. Purely biomedical research is not eligible for this assignment as they are typically interested in biological sex and not necessarily gender as the social/cultural/political construct we are unpacking in this course)
Question 2. Carefully read each article at least 2 times and identify core themes and major takeaways. What are they arguing or what question are they asking and how do they come to their conclusions?
Question 3. Consider where the articles overlap and diverge.
Question 4. Create a 1200-1500 word Literature Review. Note, this essay is a demonstration of your holistic understanding of a gender issue, theory, or concept and not a summary of 3 separate articles. You should address the following:
An introduction with an attention grabber, rationale (reasoning for why we should care about the topic), and a preview of your essay
A functional definition of the theory or concept that explains how it works or a historical description of the cultural issue you've selected (use your articles to flesh this out)
3 Key themes in this scholarship (1 paragraph each)
The significance of this body of research for gender communication studies and a brief proposal of how you might want to extend this body of research or what we should do next.
Conclusion summarizing your main findings in this process and why you think it's important.
