Let's Revisit Carmen

Carmen is an 18-year-old, Queer, first-generation, Afro-Latina community college student. Also, in addition to working 30 hours per week, she has to help take care of her younger siblings by picking them up from school, making them dinner, helping with their homework and translating information because her mother has to work. Although she shares a car with her older brother, most of the time she accomplishes her tasks by taking the bus due to his work schedule. In spite of her many responsibilities she is determined to become a lawyer like the one who is helping her family with their citizenship status. She is passionate about advocating for immigrant rights and is involved in community activism. However, she struggles with navigating the college application process and is unsure how to seek support from school counselors who seem unfamiliar with her cultural context.
