Problem
Big data, telehealth, patient portals, consumer driven services, meaningful use, data breaches; these are terms, unknown a decade ago, that are now part of the everyday conversation in healthcare. Because of concepts such as these, health information technology (HIT) now plays an even larger role in the organization's strategic planning. Development of an HIT strategic plan itself is now a necessity. This HIT strategy must align with the organization's strategic plan, which gives it context. A systems approach is the key to the development of an HIT strategy and leads to realization of the organization's mission and strategic initiatives.
