Assignment:
Kendra, a sophomore CSU nursing student, comes to the Nursing Center in the Health and Human Services Building because she is interested in eating more healthy foods. During her interview, she admits to you that she has gained more than the traditional "freshman 15 pounds" and could stand to lose a little weight. She states that she is in good health. BP 154/90 P 78 R 18. Waist measurement: 52 inches. She informs you that her weight had been stable prior to nursing school. She acknowledges that she has not stepped on a scale in awhile but notice that her stretch jeans are snug. A noted limitation by the nurse for this behavior change is her busy class and clinical schedule that allows only enough time to eat dinner that is often purchased at a drive-through or some fast food restaurant on route to and from Coppin. During the week, Kendra states she typically orders a chicken box with western fries, or 20-piece chicken nuggets with ranch dressing for dipping, fries, and a super guzzler cola or she grabs something at Subway before leaving campus. Kendra is 5'6" tall and weighs about 256 pounds. Activities outside of school hours include only sedentary past times such as watching television, studying or braiding hair for some extra cash.
1. What is your assessment (using any BMI table), identify Kendra's current BMI.
2. Using any nutrition text and/or internet resources, identify (3) appropriate nutritional interventions.
3. Using www.MyPlate.gov, discuss what other food choices would be quick, but healthier, given her fast-paced life?
4. Remember to personalize her healthy eating approach to include gradual improvement, moderation, variety, proportion and activity.
