Writing a Literature Review
Aims:
• To provide a summary of existing literature on a particular topic.
• To analyse that literature in terms of strengths and weaknesses.
• To be able to reach a conclusion about what the ‘weight of evidence' indicates.
Process:
1. Carefully specify topic - make sure the topic is clearly delineated in terms of what is included, and what is not included. Your question should tell you this.
2. Decide on your search terms (may need to look at dictionary). Always consider U.S. vs Aus spelling - eg. organisation vs organization. You will have already started this with your annotated bibliography.
3. Look in relevant journals, and data bases for your topic, as you did for the annotated bibliography. Read the abstract to identify relevant articles.
4. Read all the relevant articles.
5. Summarise the articles - should include aspects such as; what they expected to find, how they examined the issue (method), what their findings are (results) and what they mean (discussion)
6. Link the article summaries together in some way - either topic, or same variable, or same (or opposite) method etc. Each paragraph should be linked to the next.
7. DON'T write it with a separate heading for each article (as you did for the annotated bibliography) - there needs to be flow through the essay. You need to use sentences, paragraphs and headings etc.
