Practical Activity -
You are working as IT Specialist for AIBT Institute, Sydney. Currently AIBT is using 1 server and 1 router with 1 switch. As AIBT is growing there has been requirement of the VLAN topology where there will be 3 VLANS one for Guest, one for faculty/staff and the one for the students. So that everyone can access the information securely.
AIBT is to acquire two more switches to meet the growth requirements. The model chosen is CISCO 2960. The router being used is CISCO 1841.
You have been assigned the task to design, install, operate and troubleshoot the new local area network and the switches.
You have been given the following table (attached) in order to configure the required settings.
Phase 1 - Designing
- You are required to work under the policies and framework guidelines provided to you. Please specify which policies in the AIBT WHS policy manual are particularly related to this project and how you will follow them.
- Your trainer is in charge to manage your access to the site you are working at. Discuss with your trainer and formulate a site access policy for your project.
- Perform an online research on vendors. You are to select one vendor and compare your CISCO switch with a competent product. You are to perform a features and cost analysis and justify why CISCO 2960 is a good option. You can provide recommendation for another model based on your analysis. You can use the Cisco ROI calculator excel sheet provided with this assessment. The idea is for you to understand how to select a product for your solution, perform vendor research, and cost analysis that includes: Price of product, Installation Cost, Maintenance Cost and Warranties, Human Resource Expertise required to maintain the setup.
- Review the existing design documentation and implement your design, please refer to the design template provided to you for the design documentation of this project.
- You are to design the network topology. Consider the information provided to you for IP allocation and VLAN design.
- Create the IP addressing table based on your design
- Determine the network segmentation (VLANS), basic traffic management (load anticipation, number of nodes connected etc.) and basic switching requirements and specify them in your design document.
- Please discuss your design with your trainer and obtain approval.
Phase 2- Planning
- As your design is finalized, develop the implementation plan with task priority and contingency arrangement for the resources.
- Get the client sign off for the preliminary concept. Your trainer should sign off for you.
Phase 3- Implementation
Please work in the labs, with your trainer to complete these tasks.
- Perform, save and verify initial switch configuration tasks.
- Upgrade the firmware on the switch
- Configure the basic switch security
- Save and back up switch configuration files
- Determine enhanced switching technologies
- Configure and Verify VLANs as per the table
- Configure and verify the trunks between the switches
- Configure and verify the inter-VLAN routing
- Configure and Verify the Spanning tree protocol (STP) and Rapid spanning tree protocol (RSTP)
- Troubleshoot device configuration and network connectivity
- Identify and resolve the common switched network issues
Phase 4- Closure
You are to provide the brief report outlining all the required areas. You need to configure and show all the work done as screen shots and also need to provide the configuration for all your switches and the router. You are to also provide the packet tracer file that you created for this.
