Process Recording
Overview
The process recording documents a verbatim exchange between you and the client or client system. The process recording can be conducted with an individual, family, group, members of an organization, or a community group. The purpose is to allow you the opportunity to engage in social work behaviors by demonstrating social knowledge, values and skills, identifying personal feelings and reactions, employing social work theories and conceptual frameworks (for example, strengths-based perspective, cultural competence), and integrating the 9 CSWE competencies.
A process recording is required in both the foundation practicum (SWK5025, SWK5026) and advanced practicum (SWK5526, SWK5527, SWK5528).

Assignment Description
In this assignment, you will conduct a process recording. Process recordings are mediums with which to record your thoughts, feelings, and an analysis of your work as it unfolds. Further, a process recording is an exchange between you and the client or client system. A process recording allows you to examine your skills in the practicum, and to apply techniques and generalist practice knowledge.
Assignment Instructions
Review and use the Process Recording Template, linked in the Resources.
Obtain site supervisor's written permission to complete assignment during practicum hours.
Submit a copy of the signed document with your assignment.
With the permission and supervision of your site supervisor, develop a process recording.
Complete the background information on the document (your name, date of interview, client's name, list of individuals present at the interview, purpose of the interview, and a basic client description)-Remember to create a pseudonym to protect the client's confidentiality.
In the first section of the process recording document, Verbatim Exchange, record the word-for-word (verbatim) interview between you and the client.
In the second section of the process recording document, Learner Feelings/Reactions, identify the feelings and emotions you experienced during the interview, including any reactions.
In the third section, Identify Skills/Theory Used, analyze the client interview dialogue and then identify and record the associated social work skills/theories used during the interview.
In the fourth section, Competencies Used, identify and record the core competencies used.
In the sections on the second page of the template:
Summarize your impressions of the interview.
Identify lessons learned in regard to promoting social and economic justice.
Describe lessons learned in the interview that can be applied to promote social, economic, and environmental justice.
Describe how you promoted diversity during the interview.
Explain how you can use critical thinking, leadership skills, and ethical and appropriate use of technology to enhance future interviews.
List questions to ask your site supervisor about improving your social work knowledge and skills.
After completing your process recording, share your document with your site supervisor and seek his or her insight on your work. Note: The site supervisor can add comments to the fifth section of the template, Site Supervisor Comments.
Once you have obtained your site supervisor's feedback, submit your recording as an assignment.
