Case Study: India Again generalizations are not possible when describing the subcontinent of India. which has hundreds of tribes. societies. and states. India does provide us. however. with another example of societies where religion greatly influences the family structure. In the Hindu religion. the caste system is an elaborate system of social classes. People were born into a particular caste. and did not mingle with people from other castes. A concern of the Hindu religion is pollution and its avoidance. Certain substances pollute. and people who must come into contact with these substances. perhaps by way of earning a living. are therefore designated as belonging to a certain (low) Caste. The priests are of the highest caste. followed by warriors. then traders. then servants. Because membership in a caste was hereditary. people were supposed to many within their own caste. In earlier centuries in India. marriage was a religious duty for both men and women. Children were married at an early age. and became part of a joint family. as it was called. living with the groom's family at least until they were able to support themselves. The joint family is based on the authority of the head of the family. and the sharing of decision making among the adult males. The head of the joint family cares for all the dependents. not just his own sons. Caste also influenced property: people of one caste might have owned the land. and people of a lower caste might have worked on it and received a share of the rice grown. Another example of family structure in India is the polyandrous Toda of southern India. Queen describes the family structure of these people at the turn of the century." A Toda woman married one male and became the wife of his brothers as well. Only brothers shared a wife. Marital privileges were rotated among the brothers. and Queen says that there was remarkably little friction from this arrangement. The actual biological father of a child was not of concern to the Toda. Instead. one brother. usually the eldest. was chosen to be the "legal" father. Perhaps after one brother had become father to several children. another brother would be chosen to be the father of the next few children. Because the wife entered the family of the brothers. two or three generations were often to be found in the typical Toda family. Wives were not ovenrvorked because there were many hands to help. The house was the most precious possession and was owned jointly by the brothers. Although such a family arrangement may seem strange to us. one anthropologist has commented on certain advantages it had from the point of view of the Toda. Polyandry serves to provide protection for the wife when men are away a long time on hunting or trading expeditions. because one male always stays behind. The family estate is kept within control of a single group of children. And because the single wife can only give birth to one child at a time. polyandry serves as a form of birth control. necessary to the Toda not only because of their harsh climate. but because they were unable to expand into neighbouring territories controlled by Hindus. The family structure of the Toda also served an economic purpose. These people were so poor that one man could not single-handedly support a wife and her children. In order to avoid a surplus of women. there-forc. the Toda practised female infanticide to limit the female population.
