Assessment task 1

Task Description

There are two parts to this assessment (submit both parts together in one Word Document). Part 2 commences on the next page.

Assessment Overview: The purpose of assessment 1 is for you to reflect on your values, core qualities and beliefs about you as a person and as a professional, identify and discuss your personal and professional strengths and areas for improvement and to demonstrate why self-reflection is important for you in your personal and professional life. In addition, you will have the opportunity to compare and contrast two reflection models in part 2.

Part 1 (800-1000 words) Complete a self-reflection (do not use a formal reflection model for this part of the assessment). During your reflection, you are required to:
1. Identify and discuss at least 3 values that guide your decisions in your personal and professional life.
2. Identify and discuss your personal and professional strengths and why they are important for your personal and professional development. Include what inspires you, your core qualities, passion and your strengths as a professional colleague
3. Define in your own words, your understanding of person-centred care for yourself and others. (gathered from a variety of existing definitions which must be acknowledged/referenced)
4. Identify and discuss at least 2 person-centred communication skills you possess and why you think they are important to you as a person and as a professional
5. Identify and discuss at least 2 person-centred strategies you use to empower and care for yourself
6. Identify and discuss which areas you wish to improve upon and why they are important for your personal and professional development
7. Identify and discuss at least 2 person-centred strategies you currently use to plan and achieve your professional goals and how they benefit your practice
8. Identify and discuss at least 2 person-centred strategies (apart from a formal reflective model) you use to reflect on your on your professional practice

Part 2 (500-700 words) provides you with the opportunity to compare and contrast two (2) models of reflection. You will use one of these models when you complete Assessment 2

Choose one of the following reflection models (Rolfe or Gibbs) and compare and contrast it with the Wanda, Fowler and Wilson 2016 model. (Models are available in the Reflection Models section of the SNPG950 Moodle Site)

1. What do you perceive to be the strengths, limitations, similarities and differences of each model and why?
2. Which model do you prefer and why? (if you are undecided explain why)

It is crucial to acknowledge your sources of information by supporting your discussion with evidence from the literature (in-text and in a reference list on a separate page at the end of the essay).

Use the first person (I//we/me/my/our) when referring to yourself and when you are part of a group. Use the third person (the nurse, the client, he, she, it, him, his, her, hers, they, their,) when referring to others/things. Do not use the second person (your, your, yours).

Remember, the combined total for both parts of this assessment is 1500 words. Be clear and concise yet comprehensive in your writing. Start reading and writing as soon as possible so you have time to critically examine and understand the literature before teasing out the key points/themes for discussion.

Use of creative formats that support your interpretation, analysis and discussion are encouraged. For example (but not limited to):
- Video 3-5 minutes, including a credits/referencing section either within the video or in the reference list in the submitted Word document (Provide a link to the uploaded video within the Word document) [YouTube or Vimeo]
- Use of spoken word, poetry, song, dance, walking with commentary, images, drawing, digital storytelling and diagrams
- Submit both assessment parts together in the same word document including any links to any multimedia used

Assessment task 2 - Reflective Portfolio

Task Description A. Keep a daily reflective journal over a 2 week period during session. The journal will include reference to your personal and professional life (if you are currently working). Make sure the journal is complete at least 4 weeks before this assessment is due to ensure you have sufficient time to complete your reading, writing and revisions prior to the due date.

Use one of the models you compared and contrasted in assessment 1 to help you to capture your reflection. You may use your preferred model if you wish. Document your thoughts, feelings and actions including your responses to events in your personal and professional life.

Focus on issues/incidents that were important and/or significant to you. Choose events that surprised you, were uncomfortable, challenged you and /or prompted you to question your thoughts, feelings, responses and behaviour including your professional practice if you are currently working.

Also take note of events that uplifted you, inspired you, motivated you, enabled you to work well and confirm your commitment to your profession.

Try to complete your journal often, e.g. at the end of a shift or a non-working day. Keep a daily reflective journal even if you are currently not currently working.

B. (1000 words) Your reflective journal will not be assessed however you will use your journal to answer the following questions:

1. What key themes came up for you in your journal? Identify at least three 3
2. Why do you think they occurred?
3. What did you learn that was important to you during the journaling process?
4. How might you use your reflection and learning to improve your practice now or in the future if you are not currently practicing?
5. What might you share with colleagues (now or in the future) to enable/influence them to improve their practice?
6. How would you support a colleague to undertake reflection?

C. (1000 words) Choose one (1) of your values from assessment 1 that aligns with one of the events in your reflective journal, where your value was in conflict with what you were expected to do.

Provide a clear and concise outline of the event. Use your reflection model to reflect on the event and capture the key points/what you learned from the reflection. As part of your reflection you must:
- Include what you would do differently should a similar event occur again
- Identify the knowledge and skills you will require to enable you think, feel and behave differently next time
- Outline at least three strategies you would use to achieve your professional development goals including who or what may assist you.
- Discuss the impact your achievements may have on you, your colleagues, clients and the wider community/society (imagine the possibilities)

Use of creative formats that support your interpretation, analysis and discussion are highly encouraged - see assessment 1 for examples.

*Only Assessment 2 is required

The job is depending on a reflective journal. Part B of the assessment 2 is asking to work on the reflective journal to answer few questions. Those questions addressed the themes of the journal and how those have occurred. It also asked to address the self-learning procedure and how it helped in future improvement. Finally how it was reflecting on colleagues that asked to be addressed. In Part C, it asked to choose one of my values from assessment 1 that aligns with one of the events in the reflective journal, and where the value was in conflict with the actual expectation.
