Typically, an abstract is a brief written document which precedes (or represents), a longer essay, book, or research study. The purpose of an abstract is to describe that longer text: to identify key problems and issues that the text is addressing, to clearly outline a step by step logical methodology, and also to state any findings, data, or conclusions derived from the data. It should identify and define all stipulated terms or measurements which prove crucial for understanding the text. For our purposes a philosophical abstract will include these features and concentrate on identifying the key claims, premises, definitions, sub arguments, and evidence for the arguments found in each chapter of Chokepoint Capitalism by Giblin and Doctorow. Students should not use this as an opportunity to evaluate the arguments of the text. Rather, write as if you were trying to provide a concise outline of the valid/sound logical structure of the argument which appears in the assigned reading. Don't get lost in summarizing every detail of every example that occurs in the text. Rather, try and identify what those examples are doing in the argument. What kind of support is being provided to which premises, and how are those premises reasons to believe some further claim? Overly general responses will receive a fail.
