Strategic Leadership and Stakeholder Management
Assignment
Business sectors are confronting significant obstacles associated with business ethics (Iota & Shehu, 2012). An example of ethical business dilemma that a corporate leader has been facing could be Dara Khosrowshahi, the corporate leader of Urban Business Executive Ride. Uber is a fast-growing transportation company that hires independent contractors as drivers and allows passengers to hail rides, provide courier and food services (Shokoohyar, 2018).
Uber drivers are classified as independent contractors, therefore are not eligible for rights and benefits (minimum wage, compensation, and health insurance) as regular workers (Davidov, 2017). This results in helping the corporation reduce its expenses and preserve flexibility, but the lack of formal employment status allows drivers relying on the platform for income to be vulnerable to exploitation and poor working conditions (Shokoohyar, 2018). Additionally, several recent allegations of passengers assaulting drivers and vice versa have raised a major concern regarding the safety of passengers and drivers (Rogers, 2015). The environmental impacts of Uber by encouraging more ride-hailing services are also an important discussion.
Discussion Topic 1:
During the first two weeks we have extensively discussed (i) what leadership is and (ii) why responsible (ethical) leadership is important. As we have seen during our classroom conversations, working through these issues is often not straightforward and leaders grapple with ethical issues as much as everyone. Your assignment is EITHER A) OR B) below:
Assignment A
*Question 1. Identify and briefly describe an ethical BUSINESS dilemma a corporate leader has been facing during the past three years (e.g. sweat shops pollution, (mis)treatment of clients etc.). In your description also explain why you see it as an ethical issue.
Question 2. Reflect on whether that business leader, in your view, has made a sound ethical decision. In your assessment use a tool/framework to justify your arguments/position (have a look at the week 2 slides for ideas in that regard; on the web you will find a lot of alternative tools/frameworks).
Assignment (B)
Question 1. Carefully read and assess the contributions of your peers. Pick one to respond to.
Question 2. In your reply use another tool/framework to explain why you agree/disagree with the original post. It is of course okay to also use new information you have discovered around that case that might lead to different insights.
Please note that in most cases no "correct" answer exists, so it is really about justifying your arguments and working through the dilemma. Please also remain courteous to all (particularly as we are talking about personal takes on issues)! Good luck and have fun!
*Note: Need only Assignment A.
