Assessment: Critical reflexive practice
This assessment asks you to explore, identify and articulate your personal standpoint, exploring your own social privileges, power, world views, culture and the dominant cultural paradigm. It is important to have an awareness of self before you can recognise your impact on others and upon your practice. This assessment encourages you to reflect honestly upon your participation during the pre-intensive and intensive yarning circles, contemplating your interaction with others, your ability to listen deeply (dadirri) and to learn from others. This assessment also considers the skills you developed in creating a supportive and safe environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service users. These skills are vital to culturally responsive and inclusive practice.
Your use of language is very important, so please be very aware when preparing assessments. This includes the need for the use of capitals (for example Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples) and NOT using abbreviations (e.g. do not use the term ATSI). Please adopt a strength-based approach and do NOT use language that blames the individual but rather recognizes the structural origins of the social issues. These practices align with ethical social work practice.
SECTION A: Describe your personal cultural values, knowledge, skills and attitudes, consider how they were formed.
Reflect on standpoint theory and explain how these values, ideas and opinions might affect others and your future practice. While reflecting consider honestly any unconscious biases, imbalances of power, privilege, racism and discrimination.
SECTION B: Reflect upon critical reflexive practice and consider your participation in the yarning circles (pre-intensive and intensive), what did you learn about Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing and what did you learn about yourself during this process. While reflecting consider honestly any unconscious biases, imbalances of power, privilege, racism and discrimination.
SECTION C: Reflect upon the script that you created to demonstrate the skills used to engage in a conversation with a service user about their cultural background and whether they identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, critically evaluate your script, thinking about culturally responsive and strengths-based approaches to practice, assess what you did well and what you would change in the future. While reflecting consider honestly any unconscious biases, imbalances of power, privilege, racism and discrimination.
In each reflection consider honestly any unconscious biases, imbalances of power, privilege, racism and discrimination.
Students you are strongly encouraged to write the Definition of Power, when talking about that , definition of Racism and definition of Discrimination. Don't assume me knowing these definitions- You must mention definitions of these from the topic readings.
