Question: We are all aware that the purpose of any ad by any company is to sell a product. But was the US American public outraged because they felt Pepsi was not a product worth selling? Obviously not. So let's analyze this Pepsi commercial using contemporary rhetorical theory with an emphasis in visuality. From a visual rhetorical perspective, why did the Kendal Jenner Pepsi commercial get universally panned as cringe-worthy?
you're going to conduct a very basic semiotic analysis of the commercial. You will do the following:
1. Watch, re-watch, and re-rewatch the commercial look carefully at its signs.
2. Address in a very literal, economic sense: what is this rhetorical artifact literally trying to sell? (This is the noncoded iconic meaning). Then, think about the subtext of this ad: what ideas about the world is the ad figuratively "selling" in order to literally sell Pepsi (this is the coded iconic meaning)?
3. Think about the cultural context of 2017 and to which important historical "happenings" this commercial was mimicking.
2. Unpack the artifact: identify at least 3 significant visual signs in the ad.
3. Perform initial analysis: For each sign, identify the signifier and signified.
4. Identify an overarching theme (eg., wealth, peace, beauty, authority) that ties the three signs together.
6. Officially identify the ad's coded iconic meaning by explaining how the ad offers an attitude or advocates an action related to the theme (eg., wealth is good, beauty requires youth, authority is necessary).
