As a future RN, you are legally and ethically required to ensure that your practice is up-to-date and informed by the latest and strongest research evidence available.  To do this, you need to systematically search for and appraise the best research literature and related evidence-based practice material available, interpret and evaluate this, and consider the implications of this for practice.  You also need to be able to disseminate the information you have found to your peers and the public, to help build disciplinary knowledge and as part of your role as a health educator.  

In this assessment task, you will demonstrate your ability to identify a practice issue that requires an evidence-informed approach, develop a related clinical question, and search for evidence that may be used to answer this question.  You will use this evidence, and the feedback from this assessment task, to inform and underpin the final assessment task, your research presentation.

Instructions

  1. Identify an issue or situation from practice or in healthcare that requires an evidence-informed approach.
  2. Explain why this issue is important for a registered nurse to understand, drawing on the literature to support your argument.
  3. Develop a searchable question using an appropriate framework.
  4. Design a search strategy, including database choice, key terms, and Boolean operators to link these (tables may be used for this section
  5. Use this strategy to carry out your search, and identify four research articles that address your question, choosing these from the highest possible evidence sources with reference to an appropriate hierarchy
  6. Include a screenshot of the search history from your database searches as an appendix to your report.
