Assignment:
POLICY ADVOCACY PART 1: SUMMARY
Consider the housing Photovoice you shared in this week's Discussion. If you wanted to change a housing issue in your community, how would you go about it? Whom would you need to influence?
Social workers engage in policy change efforts both large and small. These range from organizing protests and demonstrations to lobbying on Capitol Hill, to presenting to local policymakers, and to writing letters to legislators. Social workers also frequently leverage social media to voice their support or opposition of a policy and to spread the message. In particular, writing a letter or posting to social media are great ways to connect with the policy process and develop legislative advocacy skills.
In this two-part Assignment, you summarize a policy of interest, consider your stance on that policy, and then advocate by writing a letter or recording a video for social media.

Writing Skill Resources
- Identify an existing policy or a proposed policy at the local, state, or national level.
- Identify an existing law or a proposed bill that is linked to this policy.
- Record relevant information about the policy in as complete a form as possible. For a bill, this includes the bill number and title. For an existing law or act, this includes the complete name of the law.
- For example, you may have heard of a "504 plan," but referring to a "504" is shorthand. The full title of the act is: Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
- Be prepared to write a summary of the policy for Part 1.
Part 1
Write a 1-page summary of the policy and related law or bill.
Your summary should be accompanied by a reference list. Use APA style to list your references.
The reference list can include any newspaper articles, local publications like pamphlets, a government representative's website that states a position, etc., that helped you to learn about the policy.
